Museums Wellington invites Arts Wellington members to an exclusive preview of Polar Night and the launch of the Poneke History Club on Thursday 26 Aug at 5.30pm (Museum of City and Sea, Queens Wharf). The Poneke History Club is the new friends group for Museum of Wellington City & Sea, Colonial Cottage Museum and Cable Car Museum. Members benefits include invitations to exclusive events and previews, 10% discount at museum shops, and 2 free visits to Colonial Cottage Museum. Polar Night features stunning black & white photographs taken by French photographer Vincent Hilaire during the Tara Arctic expedition. Also don't miss Big Band Jazz on this Sunday at 2pm at the Museum of Wellington City and Sea. This great little seven-piece band perform Dixieland, swing and dance favourites of the wartime era, and a neat selection of ballads and vocals that will have your toes tapping along in unison. Free Entry
Breaking the Surface at Soundings Theatre tomorrow night is a ceremonial call to arms, written by Susana Lei'ataua and composed by Gareth Farr. The performance weaves together ancient rhythms, sacred chants, and modern-day mythology - developed from poems written by Susana, and has been performed many times in New York and Washington. Free. Te Papa Soundings Theatre, 7.30pm on Thursday 26 Aug.
Thurs 26th at Michael Fowler Centre the 2010 NZSO National Youth Orchestra season be conducted by Bulgarian conductor Rossen Milanov, Music Director of three orchestras and Associate Conductor with the famed Philadelphia Orchestra, and Jason Bae Piano. Featuring Vaughan Williams Fantasia on a Theme by Thomas Tallis, Stravinsky Concerto for Piano and Wind, Adams The Chairman Dances, Rachmaninov Symphonic Dances.
At the City Gallery Lisa Munnelly is currently drawing her charcoal work Motherboard (2010) onto the walls of the Hirschfeld Gallery and you are invited to watch as this work takes shape. Slowburner will be fully open from 28 Aug to 12 Sep. There is also a talk by the artist at 2pm on Saturday 28 Aug which includes a film screening of her earlier work The Fullness of Emptiness (2003). Adam Auditorium. The Hirschfeld Gallery will also host a performance by a string quartet from the New Zealand School of Music at 12:30pm Friday 3 September. The quartet have selected a series of short pieces in response to Lisa Munnelly's exhibition.
On Wednesday 25 & Thursday 26 August The Film Archive will screen Pallet on the Floor adapted from the Ronald Hugh Morrieson novel. And on Friday 27th the Soup and a Seat (leek and potato) screening is Allan Wilson: Evolutionary at documentary looking at scientific developments in evolutionary change with schientists from NZ their work in dating Moa bones, and also the application of his methods to diagnosing and treating diseases such as Alzheimers, Stroke and Parkinsons. Friday at Saturday at 7pm is Angel Mine the controversial 1978 film by David Blyth (R18). Next week is the Japanese Festival with screenings of Japanese films every night, starting with Handsome Suit on Monday.
Small Stories opens at theNewDowse this Saturday, 28 August with a selection of stunning jewellery from theNewDowse collection. And on 4 September The Best of The Blumhardt opens, the vision of one of New Zealand's most passionate arts advocates, Dame Doreen Blumhardt, ONZ, DNZM, CBE. The exhibition of ceramics by local and international potters will mark the first anniversary of Doreen's death and acknowledge the ongoing commitment of The Blumhardt Foundation, which Doreen founded, as an advocate for the decorative arts. Last chance this week to catch the exhibition Andrea du Chatenier: Goldenage which closes at TheNewDowse on 29 August.
The Wellington International Ukulele Orchestra Tour of Wellington is strating this week in many venues throughout the region.
Continuing at the NZ Academy of Fine Arts Gallery until 12th September is the significant exhibition ARTISTS as ACTIVISTS showcasing the passion, energy and political creativity of some of NZ's most celebrated artists and their contribution in making a statement of belief. Running concurrently in Gallery 3 is the Annual Wellington Potters exhibition, an exhibition of contemporary and traditional ceramics by members of the Wellington Potters Association with guest artist and selector from Nelson, Sue Newitt.
Thistle Hall is currently hosting an exhibition to celebrate the Chilean Bicentenary with a group exhibition from fifteen artists - on until 29 August.
This week NZ String Quartet celebrate the 200th anniversary of Schumann, by contrasting his string quartets with those of the equally passionate Shostakovich at St Mary of the Angels at 6pm on 28th August, and 31st August at Hunter Council Chamber at 7.30pm. http://www.nzsq.co.nz/news/bookings-now-open-for-schumann-and-shostakovich-series/
Beervana is on this weekend at the Wellington Town Hall, celebrating the craft of brewing with over 70 brewers showcasing their beers.
In celebration of the 200th birthdays of Frederic Chopin and Robert Schumann, Wellington Chamber Music will provide a diving programme of their piano works, performed by Michael Houstoun, 3pm Sunday 29 August at Illot Theatre.
NZ Society of Authors is having a Branch Meeting on Mon 30th Aug 7.30 - 9.30, with an open mic evening at Thistle Inn, Thorndon (near Wellington Railway Station). Do you have a poem or part of a short story you would like to read? Bring your writing and register on the night. Entry: $2 for members and $3 non members.
The Writers on Monday event on 30 AUGUST is No Fretful Sleeper: Paul Millar. Bill Pearson's homosexuality forced on him a life of contradiction and secrecy in a society that had 'no place for the man who is different.' In his acclaimed new biography, Paul Millar examines the pressures that shaped the author of Coal Flat and 'Fretful Sleepers' - Pearson's famous critique of Kiwi conformity - and fills in the background with Mark Williams. Monday 12.15-1.15pm at The Marae, Te Papa.
Bella Kalolo is starring in TheNewDowse Late Lounge on Thursday, 2 September, 7-9pm | KOHA - multi-talented finalist for best Female Vocalist at the Pacific Music Awards and vocalist for the likes of Don McGlashan, Dave Dobbyn, Hollie Smith, Fat Freddy's Drop, Tina Cross, Jackie Clarke, the NZSO and Nathan Haines.
Opening at Toi Pōneke Gallery on 3 Sep is GLUTTON'S DIARY by Lennart Maschmeyer and Dominic McElwee. Two emerging Wellington-based artists present provocative and diverse visions of contemporary unease.

The Royal NZ Ballet hits prime time television with a new show starting on Tuesday 31 at 8pm on TV3 - the series called The Secret Lives of Dancers will lift the lid on what happens off-stage in a new television series on TV3. Intriguing!
Footnote Dance has announced it will be touring a new season of Footnote Forte in October, featuring six new works from choreographers Malia Johnston, Kristian Larsen, Maria Dabrowska, Sarah Foster, Lyne Pringle and Sarah Knox. They are also taking dance outside the usual spaces and in Wellington, performances will be held on Mondays October 11 and 18 beginning at the Wellington Museum of City and Sea, then The Boatshed and concluding at The Museum Hotel.
The new Senior Curator at the City Gallery Wellington, Kate Montgomery, formerly Director of The Physics Room in Christchurch, will take up her position at the Gallery next week.

Distraction Camp by Free Theatre Christchurch opens on Tuesday 31st August - Saturday 11th September @ 9pm. A bishop hears the confession of a young penitent, and gives penance. A judge hears the testimony of a thief, who is consequently punished by an ominous masked figure. A camp commandant trains his "horse" - a young woman who must be disciplined and put through her paces... Welcome to the House of Illusions....

Blues guitar legend Paul Ubana Jones plays at a Soundstage concert at Downstage at 29th Aug. Of Nigerian and English ancestry, Paul was classically trained in cello and guitar but brings a global perspective to his music, combining highly original interpretations of classic songs such as "The House of the Rising Sun" with originals. He crosses genres of blues, soul, groove and folk, with Indian tunings and an impressive finger-picking technique.

Forums and Artists talks...
In Cakacakavata - Working Together at Te Papa (Thurs 26th Aug at 6pm), Leba Toki, Bale Jione, and Robin White talk about their collaborative experience, with photographs that demonstrate the preparation and patterning of their masi (tapa). They collaborated in 2000 and again in 2008, along with Leba's sister-in-law Bale Jione, working together over several months to produce a collection of pieces.
WORKSHOP: For the Record. Roger Shepherd founder of Flying Nun Records, Annabel Youens and Jeff Mitchell from MusicHype, and music writer Simon Sweetman along with other Wellington-based independent music agents will discuss the future of music distribution, particularly in relation to the possibilities of the online environment. This event will workshop ideas and provide practical tools to consider the role of the record label now. Chaired by Mark Williams, independent curator and musician. Adam Art Gallery. The WCC Creative Communities Local Funding Scheme is now open for applications. Applications must reach Wellington City Council's Grants team by 5.00pm on Tuesday 31 August 2010. This round is for projects starting after 15 September.
Toi Pōneke Arts Centre DEBLYN residency programme is calling for applications. This residency includes nine months' studio rental at Toi Pōneke Arts Centre starting in February, and a three week exhibition at Toi Pōneke Gallery. The successful applicant will receive support from Toi Pōneke staff throughout their residency, and $1000 towards their exhibition in November 2011. Toi Pōneke Hub is now offering advice sessions. People with expertise in the arts and related fields are offering 45-minute, one-to-one sessions. This includes artists, producers, managers, publicists, curators, script editors, accountants, lawyers - and many more.
